Back-to-School season is such an exciting time to share books. As a lifelong book lover who has navigated this season as a student, a teacher, and now a parent—I know what I’m looking for in BTS reads. There are so many different angles to explore: learning about a new physical space, addressing first-day jitters, building classroom community, and more.

All of the titles I’ve gathered here are recent or upcoming releases that feel especially fitting for the start of a new school year—and the wide range of emotions that come with it. Let’s check them out!

Back-to-school jitters & getting acclimated to a new school:

🏫 The Tour at School by Katie Clapham

An anxious new student gets a tour of the school from a current student who’s just one year older. This book is cute and funny and highlights the importance of being a welcoming friend, especially when someone is feeling nervous and alone in a new space. Kids will enjoy spotting familiar school features in the detailed illustrations.

Making mistakes:

Tiny T. Rex and the First Day Oopsie by Jonathan Stutzman

In this back-to-school adventure, Tiny T. Rex is ready for anything—until a few “oopsies” remind him that mistakes are part of learning. With his best friend by his side and his trademark optimism intact, Tiny discovers trying new things is what school is really about. This is a heartwarming and humorous read-aloud for any little one facing a big new start.

Naming and navigating big feelings:

The Tangle by Kimmy Schuelke

The Tangle is a unique, empowering read that helps kids name and navigate big feelings—perfect for easing transitions and building emotional resilience from day one of the school year. Set in a diverse, supportive classroom, it introduces “The Tangle” as a metaphor for overwhelm and offers simple, somatic strategies for calm.

Celebrating differences:

We’re Different and It’s Totally Cool by Camey Yeh

This picture book is so FUN and joyful! It helps kids celebrate what makes them unique. With playful comparisons and colorful illustrations, this is the perfect read to ease first-day nerves, build classroom community, and remind kids that our differences make school a more interesting (and fun!) place to be.

Neurodiversity in a classroom:

Wish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

This uplifting picture book, based on characters from Fish in a Tree, follows Oliver—a neurodivergent child whose brain is always buzzing with ideas. While school can feel overwhelming and isolating, Oliver discovers that his unique way of thinking should be celebrated. This book is a joyful ode to neurodiversity, creativity, and finding your place in the world.

You can check out additional back to school titles - divided into themed lists - here. Whether you're looking for books about friendship, managing big feelings, or simply getting excited for a new classroom, I’ve got you covered.

I’m always on the lookout for stories that support kids (and the grown-ups who love them), so let me know if there’s a must-read I’m missing. I’d love to add it to the list!
